Why DNA Testing Matters

DNA testing identifies inherited genetic variants that can cause or increase the risk of specific health conditions. By testing breeding cats before including them in a breeding programme, responsible breeders can make informed pairing decisions that minimise the risk of passing inherited conditions to offspring.

What We Test For

All breeding Bengals at Bengal Kittens Breeders Home are DNA tested for 50 genetic conditions. Key conditions tested include:

• Pyruvate Kinase Deficiency (PKdef) — an inherited condition causing haemolytic anaemia
• Progressive Retinal Atrophy (PRAb) — a condition causing progressive blindness
• Progressive Retinal Atrophy rdAc — an additional PRA variant
• Polycystic Kidney Disease (PKD variant 1) — causing progressive kidney failure

In addition to these primary conditions, our cats are tested for a further 46 genetic variants covering a wide range of inherited health risks.

Our Testing Commitment

Only cats meeting our strict health criteria — testing clear or carrier-appropriate for all tested conditions — are included in our breeding programme. DNA test results are available on request.
