Everything Bengal buyers need to know about Feline Coronavirus and FIP
Last updated: 03/06/2026
Feline Coronavirus (FCoV) is one of the most significant health concerns in multi-cat environments and Bengal breeding programmes. It is a common viral infection that spreads through faecal-oral contact. In most cases, FCoV causes mild symptoms or none at all. However, in a small percentage of cases — estimated between 5% and 10% — FCoV can mutate within an individual cat to cause Feline Infectious Peritonitis (FIP), a serious and historically fatal disease.
Many Bengal breeders operate in multi-cat environments where FCoV is endemic. Without a structured elimination protocol, kittens can leave for their new homes as FCoV positive, carrying the virus that may — in rare cases — lead to FIP. Responsible buyers should always ask their breeder: are your kittens FCoV tested and clear before leaving?
Bengal Kittens Breeders Home is the only Bengal breeder in the UK to guarantee every kitten leaves us certified FCoV clear. Our structured FCoV elimination protocol was developed in collaboration with our veterinary practice and following guidance from Dr Addie at The University of Glasgow — one of the world's foremost authorities on Feline Coronavirus. Every kitten receives a written FCoV clear certificate before they leave us.
